How to Become an Enrolled Agent (EA): The 2026 Path

The Enrolled Agent (EA) is the highest credential the IRS awards, granting unlimited rights to represent taxpayers. For tax-focused professionals, it is often the fastest respected designation to earn — no college degree is required.

Two paths to enrollment

  1. Pass the Special Enrollment Examination (SEE). The three-part exam covers (1) Individuals, (2) Businesses, and (3) Representation, Practices & Procedures.
  2. IRS experience. Certain former IRS employees can qualify based on qualifying experience.

The steps

  • Obtain a PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number).
  • Study for and pass all three SEE parts (you have a rolling window to complete them).
  • Apply for enrollment (Form 23) and pass a suitability/background check.

Keeping the credential

Once enrolled, EAs complete 72 hours of continuing education every three years — a minimum of 16 hours per year, including 2 hours of ethics annually — in federal tax law and related topics from IRS-approved providers, and renew their PTIN each year.

Is it worth it?

For anyone building a tax practice, the representation rights and credibility are significant, and the barrier to entry is lower than the CPA. It pairs well with a growing preparation or bookkeeping business.
