Nano Learning: The Newest CPE Format Explained
Nano learning is a newer CPE delivery format designed for busy professionals: short, focused, single-topic modules — typically about ten minutes — that award a fraction of a credit.
How it works
- Each module covers one narrow learning objective.
- Credit is awarded in increments (commonly 0.2 CPE credit per 10-minute module), unlike the 50-minute hour used for full courses.
- There is usually a short assessment, but nano learning is not simply a shortened self-study course — it is its own recognized format under NASBA/AICPA standards.
The catch: acceptance varies
Not every state board accepts nano learning, and some that do cap how many nano credits count toward a cycle. Before relying on it, confirm your board recognizes the format and check any limit.
When it shines
Nano learning is ideal for topping off a cycle, staying current on a single change (a new form, a rate update), or fitting learning into small gaps in the day. For your bulk requirement — and for subject minimums like ethics — full self-study or webinars are usually the better fit.
