CPE Carryover Rules: Can You Roll Over Extra Credit Hours?
If you finish a reporting cycle with more CPE than required, you may wonder whether the extra hours count toward the next cycle. The answer is: it depends entirely on your board or credentialing body.
The general landscape
- Some jurisdictions allow carryover of a limited number of general hours into the next period.
- Many do not allow any carryover — hours earned this cycle only count this cycle.
- Subject-specific hours usually do not carry. Even where general hours roll over, ethics and other required subject minimums typically must be met fresh each cycle.
Why it matters
Assuming you have a “bank” of hours you do not actually have is a common way to fall short at renewal. Carryover, where allowed, is usually capped and applies only to certain categories.
