How to Choose a CPE Provider: What to Check Before You Buy
With hundreds of providers competing for your renewal dollars, choosing where to buy your CPE matters. The wrong choice can mean credits your board won’t accept or courses that waste your time. Here is a checklist to run before you buy.
1. Sponsor registration
Confirm the provider is registered with the bodies that matter for your credential — NASBA for CPAs, an IRS CE provider number for EA and AFSP tax courses, and the relevant sponsor for other designations. The course or provider should state its status clearly.
2. Field of study and credit hours
Every course should list its NASBA field of study and exact CPE credit hours so you can map it to your requirement, including any ethics or subject-area minimums.
3. Format that fits you
Self-study is flexible and on-demand; webinars offer live interaction. Make sure the format is one your board accepts and that any delivery caps are respected.
4. Real, current content
Tax and accounting change constantly. Look for courses with recent review dates and substantive material — not thin filler padded to hit a credit count.
5. Certificates and records
You should receive a compliant certificate of completion immediately, and ideally a place to store your CPE history for board audits.
6. Transparent pricing
Per-credit pricing, unlimited memberships, and firm packages should be clear. Watch for renewal traps and hidden fees.
7. Support
Responsive customer support matters when a deadline is near. Test it before you rely on it.
Run this checklist once and you will buy CPE with confidence every renewal.
